Gate valves utilize a disc to restrict or permit fluid flow. They offer a minimal drop in pressure when fully opened and they eliminate leaks when closed. The rising stem configuration makes the process of visual inspections very easy. Gate valves are primarily used when straight-line flow with minimum restriction is needed and ideally suited for petroleum applications because they perform well with viscous fluids.
